Travel Vaccination Canberra: Everything You Need to Know Before Travelling Overseas
Share
Going overseas is exciting. But staying healthy on your trip matters too.
Before you leave, make sure you are protected. Getting the right travel vaccines in Canberra is one of the best things you can do.
At Woden Compounding Pharmacy in Phillip, we help locals travel safely. This guide tells you what you need, when to get it, and how we can help.
Why Travel Vaccination Matters
Your body is used to germs found in Australia. When you go overseas, it meets new ones. Some of these can make you very sick.
Many diseases are rare in Australia. But they are common in other countries. The right vaccines keep you safe before you arrive.
Some countries also require proof of vaccines to let you in. Yellow fever is one example. Without the right cert, you may be turned away at the border.
When Should You Get Travel Vaccines in Canberra?
Book 6 to 12 Weeks Before You Leave
Try to see a pharmacist at least 6 to 12 weeks before your trip. Your body needs time to build a strong cover.
Here is why early booking helps:
• Some vaccines need more than one dose
• Your body needs weeks to respond fully
• Some travel pills must be started well in advance
Leaving soon? Do not stress. Come in anyway. Some cover is always better than none. We can use a faster schedule if needed.
Common Travel Vaccines for Australian Travellers
The vaccines you need will depend on where you go and your health. Here are the most common ones.
Hepatitis A
Hepatitis A spreads through food and water. It is common in many countries. One course gives you a long cover. Most people heading overseas should get this one.
Hepatitis B
Hepatitis B spreads through blood and body fluids. Get this if you might need medical care abroad. It is also wise for adventure sports or travel to high risk areas.
Typhoid
Typhoid comes from bad food and water. It is common in South Asia, Africa, and Latin America. If you go to these areas, this vaccine is a must.
Cholera
Cholera is a risk where sanitation is poor. The vaccine also helps reduce the chance of traveller’s stomach bugs. These are very common when you travel.
Japanese Encephalitis
This disease is spread by mosquitoes. It is found in rural parts of Asia and the Pacific. If you plan to be outside a lot, ask us about this one.
Meningococcal Disease
This vaccine is required for Saudi Arabia. It is also wise for travel to parts of Africa. Anyone going to large crowded events should look into it too.
Yellow Fever
Yellow fever is required by law to enter many countries in Africa and South America. It must be given at an approved clinic. You also get a Yellow Card as proof. Get it at least 10 days before you fly.
Rabies
Going somewhere remote? Working with animals? Rabies vaccine is worth thinking about. It is found in many countries where treatment after a bite is hard to get.
Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR)
Measles is on the rise worldwide. All travellers should check their MMR vaccine is up to date. This is key before any long trip overseas.
Influenza
A flu shot is always smart before travel. Get it at least two weeks before you leave. This matters most on long flights or in countries in their flu season.

ACT Pharmacy Vaccine Rules — Updated April 2025
Great news for Canberra locals. The ACT Government updated its pharmacy rules in April 2025. Pharmacists can now give a wider range of vaccines. You do not always need a GP visit first.
This makes getting travel vaccines faster and easier. Woden Compounding Pharmacy follows all current ACT Health rules.
How Much Do Travel Vaccines Cost?
Some vaccines are free. They fall under the National Immunisation Program. Others cost a fee. Medicare may cover some of the cost.
Your pharmacist will explain all costs before you start. No hidden fees.
Book early. Last-minute vaccines can mean gaps in your cover. Planning ahead saves time and money.
Travel Vaccination FAQs
1. Can I get travel vaccines at a Canberra pharmacy without a GP referral?
Yes. ACT pharmacists can now give most travel vaccines without a GP script. Yellow fever is the only one that needs an approved clinic. For all other travel vaccines, book with us directly.
2. How early should I get vaccinated before my trip?
Aim for 6 to 12 weeks before you leave. Your body needs that time to build full cover. But even if you are leaving soon, still come in. A faster schedule is better than no cover at all.
3. What is the Yellow Card and do I need it?
The Yellow Card is your proof of yellow fever vaccine. Many countries in Africa and South America ask for it at the border. Get it at least 10 days before travel. We can tell you if your trip needs one.
4. Are travel vaccines safe if I have a health problem?
Usually yes. We always check your health first. We look at your current medicines and health history. If extra care is needed, we work with your GP. Your safety comes first.
5. Can Woden Compounding Pharmacy make custom travel medicines?
Yes. We are a specialist compounding chemist in Canberra. We make medicines that are not sold in stores. This can include custom antihistamines and travel health products. Ask us what we can make for you.
